When to Book a Maternity Photoshoot in London: A Complete Timing Guide
Timing makes a real difference to how a maternity session looks and feels. Here is exactly when to book, when to shoot, and what to consider if your dates are not quite ideal. One of the most common questions I receive from expectant mothers is simply: when should I book? The answer has two parts. When to secure your date, and when in your pregnancy to actually have the session. Both matter, and they are different questions. The ideal window for the session itself The sweet spot for a maternity photoshoot is between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant. At 28 weeks, the bump has a beautiful, clearly defined shape. By 34 weeks, the pregnancy is visible enough that every image will read as unmistakably maternal, while you are still comfortable enough to move, hold different positions, and enjoy the experience fully. Earlier than 28 weeks, the bump can be less defined on camera than it looks in person, and some women find themselves wishing they had waited. Later than 34 weeks is absolutely possible, but you may find yourself more tired and less comfortable, which affects how relaxed the session feels. The photographs from 30 to 32 weeks tend to be the most striking. The bump is unmistakable and most women are still feeling good. When to book your date Book as early as you feel comfortable doing so. I would suggest no later than 20 to 22 weeks. Weekend and evening slots fill quickly, particularly at popular times of year, and there is very little flexibility in the maternity window. Booking early gives you a proper choice of dates rather than taking whatever is left. If anything changes closer to the time, including your due date being revised, dates can almost always be adjusted. Does the season matter? Spring sessions (March to May) offer beautiful soft light and are consistently popular Summer suits lighter, airier outfits and tends to feel relaxed and warm-toned Autumn has a rich, golden quality that photographs particularly well in studio settings Winter sessions are entirely possible in a studio environment and have their own quiet, intimate atmosphere All sessions take place in a private studio environment, which means lighting is controlled and consistent regardless of the weather outside. Season affects mood and styling more than it affects image quality. What if your timing is not perfect? Life rarely follows a plan exactly. If you are at 36 weeks and realising you have not yet booked, contact me anyway. I may still have availability, and a 36-week session can be wonderful if you are feeling well. The most important thing is not to let perfect be the enemy of something very good. Similarly, if you want to photograph earlier than 28 weeks for personal reasons, there are ways to approach this that still produce beautiful images. It just takes a slightly different approach.
