First Birthday Photoshoot in London: Everything You Need to Know
Your baby's first birthday arrives faster than you ever imagined. Here is everything you need to know about marking it with a photoshoot that does the moment justice. Your baby's first birthday feels like it arrives in the blink of an eye. One day you are bringing them home as a newborn; the next, they are sitting up, reaching for things, laughing at everything, and somehow about to turn one. It is a milestone that deserves more than a phone photo by the birthday cake at the party. A first birthday photoshoot gives you something you will actually keep. Proper portraits of this specific version of your baby, at this exact age, before it is gone. What is a first birthday photoshoot? A first birthday photoshoot is a professional photography session designed around your baby turning one. It captures the personality, the cheeky expressions, the curious hands, and the joy of this age in a way that a phone simply cannot. The session is unhurried and baby-led. There is no pressure to perform, and no rushing. Many families choose to include a cake smash as part of the session: a personalised cake (or cupcake) given to your baby to explore and enjoy entirely on their own terms. It is joyful, messy, and almost always produces the most expressive photographs of a child's entire first year. Is a cake smash the same as a first birthday photoshoot? Not exactly. But the two are closely linked. A cake smash is one element within a first birthday session, not the whole thing. A full session typically includes family portrait time before the cake, the smash itself, and a bath splash finale where your baby gets cleaned up in the most photogenic way possible. Not every family wants a cake smash. And that is completely fine. Some prefer a milestone-style session focused on portraits at this age: sitting, standing, laughing, playing. Others want the full experience. The session is shaped around what feels right for your family. When should I book? As early as possible. Ideally two to three months before your baby's birthday. First birthday sessions are among the most popular I offer, and popular date slots fill up well in advance. The session itself works best right around the birthday, or within a few weeks either side, when your baby is at the peak of this specific stage. How do I prepare? Schedule the session for a time of day when your baby is usually happy and well-rested. Morning sessions tend to work best for little ones. Feed them before they arrive but leave a little room. Seeing the cake for the first time on a completely full stomach sometimes slows things down. Bring a change of clothes for after the bath splash, plus nappies and any comfort items. Choose an outfit they are comfortable in. For the cake smash itself, something that can get messy. Little dungarees, bloomers, or a simple vest work beautifully. Bring snacks for after the session. They often fall asleep on the way home. Will my baby cooperate? This is the question every parent asks, and the honest answer is: they always surprise you. Some babies dive straight into the cake with both fists. Others observe it with great suspicion for several minutes before discovering it is edible and having an extraordinary time. Both make for wonderful photographs. Sessions are completely baby-led. Nothing is forced, nothing is rushed, and I have worked with hundreds of one-year-olds. I genuinely love how unpredictable they keep things. Where does the session take place? I work from studio spaces in Canning Town, East London, and Clapham, South London. Both are easily reached by public transport and are fully equipped. You do not need to bring anything for the set. The full address is confirmed once you book. What happens after the session? Your images are carefully edited and presented at a private viewing session, usually within five to seven days of your shoot. You will see your photographs for the first time together on a Zoom call, with evening appointments available for working parents. From there, you choose the images you love. First birthday photographs are not just about a baby with cake. They are about a whole year of becoming. The tiny fingers, the enormous personality, and the family that has formed around this little person.
