Of all the sessions I photograph, gender reveal maternity shoots are among the most emotionally intense. You are documenting a pregnancy at its most visually beautiful, and layered on top of that is the anticipation of discovering whether you are expecting a boy or a girl. The combination produces images unlike anything else. Here is everything you need to know about how a gender reveal maternity session works, and whether it might be right for you. What exactly is a gender reveal maternity session? A gender reveal maternity session is a variation on a standard maternity shoot in which the sex of the baby is revealed during the session, on camera. The reveal itself becomes part of the photographs. Your expressions in that moment, the shock, the joy, the tears, are all captured. The logistics are simple. Before the session, you arrange for your midwife, sonographer, or a trusted third party to pass the information to me or to a prop supplier. You and your partner arrive not knowing. The reveal happens within the session and I photograph the whole sequence. How the reveal is staged There are several ways to handle the reveal itself within a session. When to book a gender reveal session The timing considerations are the same as a standard maternity session. Between 28 and 34 weeks is the sweet spot, when the bump photographs most beautifully and you are still comfortable to move freely. Many couples choose to do the gender reveal at the earlier end of this window so they have the rest of the pregnancy to prepare with the information. Who should be there That is entirely your decision. Some couples want it to be just the two of them, an intimate moment captured privately. Others want family present. Grandparents, siblings, close friends. The session can accommodate a small group if you would like to share the moment with people who matter to you. If you are keeping the sex a surprise from wider family and friends, a private session gives you the flexibility to decide later what to share and when.
