How to Prepare for Your Baby's Milestone Photoshoot in London
A little preparation makes a real difference on the day. Here is exactly what to think about before your baby's milestone session, from nap timing to what to pack. Milestone sessions are designed to be relaxed. There is no rigid schedule your baby needs to follow, and there is no such thing as a session that goes to plan in every detail. But a small amount of preparation in the days and hours beforehand can make a noticeable difference to how settled your baby feels and how much of their real personality comes through. Here is what genuinely helps. Time the session around a nap This is probably the single most useful thing you can do. Aim for your baby to arrive at the studio either well-rested from a recent nap, or in that alert, happy window that often follows a good sleep. Overtired babies find it hard to settle, and a session that starts with an overtired baby takes longer to find its rhythm. If your baby naps predictably, think about when that window of wakefulness tends to be most settled and cheerful, and try to schedule the session around that. It does not need to be precise, but it helps. Feed before you arrive A fed baby is a settled baby. Try to feed your baby shortly before leaving for the studio, so they arrive content rather than hungry. Do not worry about timing this perfectly. Feeds during the session are completely normal and expected. If your baby needs feeding halfway through, we simply pause and continue when they are ready. What to wear Simple clothing in soft, neutral tones photographs most beautifully. Cream, white, soft grey, and muted warm tones work well. Many babies at this stage are photographed in just a nappy or a simple vest, which keeps the focus entirely on their face and expressions. Avoid busy patterns, bold logos, or anything overly fussy. The clothing is a backdrop to your baby, not a focal point. Bring a couple of options so we have flexibility on the day. A simple vest or babygrow in white or cream A soft knit cardigan or layer in a neutral tone A spare outfit in case of spills Any special outfit you would like to include, kept simple What to bring Nappies and wipes (more than you think you will need) Any comfort item your baby uses, such as a dummy or a familiar soft toy Snacks for your baby if they are weaning Snacks and a drink for you. Sessions run for 60 to 90 minutes. Feeding equipment if you are bottle feeding A favourite toy that reliably makes them laugh On the day itself Give yourself plenty of time to travel. Arriving rushed affects everyone, and the session always starts better when both you and your baby have had a moment to settle into the space. The studio is a calm environment, and babies tend to adapt to it quickly, but having five or ten minutes to look around before we start makes a difference. Try not to build it up too much beforehand. Babies pick up on parental anticipation and can find it unsettling. A simple, calm morning with normal routines is the best preparation. The sessions that produce the most beautiful images are almost always the ones where the parents arrived relaxed. Your baby takes their cues from you. What not to worry about Whether your baby will smile. Whether they will cooperate. Whether they will cry. Whether the timing will be perfect. None of these things need to be on your mind. That is what the session is designed to handle. Your only job is to arrive, be present, and let the session unfold at your baby's pace. The moments that make the best photographs are almost never the ones anyone planned.
