Maternity Photography in London: What to Expect From Your Session
A maternity session is one of the most personal shoots you will ever have. Here is exactly what it looks like from the moment you arrive to the moment you see your images for the first time. There is a window of time during pregnancy that passes faster than almost any other. The bump is visible, the anticipation is building, and you are caught between two versions of your life. A maternity session exists to hold that moment before it moves on. Most people who book a maternity session with me have never done anything like it before. Some feel self-conscious about being photographed during pregnancy. Others are not entirely sure what a session involves. This guide is for both. When to book The ideal time for a maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks. At this point, the bump is beautifully round and clearly visible, but you are still comfortable enough to move freely and enjoy the experience. Earlier than 28 weeks and the bump can be harder to photograph beautifully. Later than 34 weeks and the session can simply be more tiring. That said, every pregnancy is different. If you have a particular reason to photograph earlier or later, we can discuss what will work best for you. What actually happens in the session Sessions take place in a private studio environment in London, accessible from across the city. When you arrive, the priority is always your comfort. There is no rushing into position. We spend a few minutes settling in, and I walk you through everything before we start. I guide you throughout the session, suggesting positions and movements that work beautifully for your body and your bump. Nothing is stiff or formal. The aim is always for the images to feel like you, not like a version of you that is trying very hard. The most powerful maternity images are the ones where the person in them looks completely present. Not performing. Just there. Who can be part of the session Partners are warmly welcome, and many couples find the session becomes something meaningful for both of them. Children are also welcome if you would like to include them. Some of the most moving maternity images I have captured include a little one with their hands on a bump, completely unaware of how extraordinary that moment is. What the session fee covers The session fee is £95 and includes your full shoot and one beautifully edited digital image. After your session, you are invited to a private viewing approximately five days later, where you see your photographs for the first time and choose which images and any artwork you would like to keep. The viewing takes place over Zoom at a time that suits you, with evening appointments available. There is no pressure and no time limit. You choose at your own pace. You do not need to feel confident in front of a camera Almost every person who comes to me for a maternity session tells me they are not used to being photographed. Most of them leave saying it was nothing like they expected, in the best possible way. Feeling comfortable is my responsibility, not yours. That is what the whole session is designed to do.
