Newborn Photography in London: What to Expect From Your Session
Your baby will only be this small for the briefest window of time. Here is exactly what a newborn session looks like, and why so many families say it was one of the best decisions they made. A newborn session is unlike any other kind of photography. There is no directing. There is no rushing. There is no precise schedule. Instead, the session moves entirely around your baby, and the results are something you will genuinely treasure for the rest of your life. If you have never done anything like this before, or if you are feeling unsure about what to expect, this is for you. When does a newborn session take place? The ideal window for newborn photography is within the first five to fourteen days of life. During this period, babies sleep deeply and frequently, they curl naturally into the poses that make newborn portraits so beautiful, and they are still small enough to photograph in a way that captures how truly tiny they are. After around three weeks, babies become more alert and wakeful, which changes the feel of the session entirely. It is still possible to photograph newborns up to around four weeks, but the experience is different and the images will reflect a baby who is already beginning to unfold into the world. How long does the session last? Sessions typically run between two and three hours, though this is always flexible. Babies feed, babies need settling, babies have their own ideas about timing. None of this is a problem. The session is designed to accommodate exactly that. You should never feel rushed. If your baby needs an extra feed or a long settling period, we simply pause and wait. The best photographs happen when your baby is fully content, and that cannot be forced. The session takes as long as it takes. Rushing a newborn session produces photographs that look rushed. Patience is the most important ingredient. What happens during the session? We begin with your baby, usually swaddled or wrapped in soft fabrics, and work through a series of gentle setups that focus on closeness, simplicity, and natural light. There are no props cluttering the frame and no studio backdrops that look obviously artificial. The aesthetic is clean, calm, and timeless. We also capture family portraits. You and your partner holding your baby, quiet moments between the three of you, the details that already feel ordinary but will feel significant in ten years. Siblings are welcome too, and I find they often produce some of the most beautiful photographs of the entire session. Where does the session take place? Sessions take place in my private studio in London. The studio is warm, calm, and designed specifically for newborn photography. Parking is available, and the space is easy to reach from across London. What should I bring?
