What your baby wears makes a real difference to how the images feel. Here is a simple guide to outfits that look beautiful in photographs and survive the cake. Choosing what to put your baby in for their cake smash session is one of those things that feels more complicated than it needs to be. There are two parts to think about: the family portrait outfits at the start, and the cake smash outfit itself. Here is how to approach both. Family portrait outfits For the family portrait section at the start of the session, the same principles apply as any family photoshoot. Aim for coordination rather than matching. Choose a soft colour palette that works for everyone and let each person wear something they feel comfortable and themselves in. Soft neutrals, warm tones, dusty blues, and sage greens all photograph beautifully. Avoid very bright colours or busy patterns, which can distract from faces and expressions. The cake smash outfit For the cake smash itself, the golden rule is simple: it will get messy. Choose something you are completely happy to see covered in cake.
