When to Book a Newborn Photographer in London: A Complete Timing Guide
The newborn window is short. Much shorter than most parents expect. Here is exactly when to book, when to shoot, and what to do if your baby arrives earlier or later than planned. Of all the things parents wish they had done differently after a newborn session, the most common is wishing they had booked earlier. Not earlier in the baby's life. Earlier in the pregnancy. The newborn photography window is brief and the demand for quality photographers in London is real. Here is everything you need to know to get the timing right. When in your baby's life to have the session The ideal window for newborn photography is days five to fourteen after birth. During this time, your baby still sleeps deeply and for long stretches, curls naturally into the compact positions that make newborn portraits so distinctive, and has not yet fully uncurled and stretched out into a slightly bigger version of themselves. After two weeks, babies become progressively more alert and wakeful. Sessions are still possible up to around four weeks, but the images have a different quality and require a more flexible approach. From around six weeks, a baby is no longer really a newborn in photographic terms, though they are absolutely still beautiful and completely worth photographing. The first two weeks go faster than anything you have ever experienced. Book early so the session is already planned before your baby arrives. When during your pregnancy to book The best time to book is between 20 and 28 weeks pregnant. This gives you a good choice of dates around your due date and allows me to hold a slot provisionally until your baby arrives and you can confirm the exact timing. Booking this early is not a sign of over-planning. It is simply recognising that a good newborn photographer in London has a full diary, and the two-week window after your baby is born is not the right time to be searching. What if my baby arrives early? Premature babies typically need a little extra time before a session. If your baby arrives early and has spent any time in the neonatal unit, we simply adjust the timing accordingly. The window is calculated from when your baby is ready, not from their birth date. Contact me as soon as you know and we will work out the right moment together. What if my baby arrives late? This is very common and there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Dates are always held flexibly around your due date, and we can shift your session by a week or two as needed. The most important thing is that you have already been in touch and have a place in the diary. What if I forgot to book and my baby is already here? Get in touch immediately. If your baby is under three weeks old, there is a good chance we can make it work. Sessions for slightly older babies are possible and still produce wonderful results. They simply look a little different, and that is worth knowing in advance rather than as a surprise. Five to fourteen days: the ideal newborn window Up to three to four weeks: still very possible, slightly different feel Four to twelve weeks: a different kind of session, still beautiful Book during pregnancy, ideally between 20 and 28 weeks
